The follow two sketches are for an online web comic I'm starting up with an indie superstar artist not yet known to YOU ALL. But trust me, you will cry tears of joy when you see her powers! Its going to be a panel tag sort of comic in which I do a page, then she does a page, and so on-- the story will be very loose and dependent on what we perceive to be best or funnest route to go! A fun little experiment in improv comics! More on that as it develops oh yes.

Last little bit is a sketch I found on the back of a giant sketch pad i decimated ages ago-- I love nonsensical sketches like these, I think I will develop it further after school ends, something about a 3 ft tall ninja guitarist and a 300lb japanese drummer makes me grin like a school girl

First and foremost! Issue #26 of Elephantmen is out now! And inside, you'll find art and coloring by yours truly and mr astrobrain! For the most part, my work will be found at the back of the issue, for a new mini comic that will be showing up in the back of the issue monthly -- http://charleylovesrobots.com/ -- it'll be drawn and colored by both andre and I, switching off pages here n there!

SECOND -- Issue 3 of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT is out AS WELL, go pick THAT up -- great ending to the story arc! I just wrapped up colors on issue 4 before leaving to NYC, this new story arc by David Hine is looking AWESOME. And of course moritat is tearing it up on pencils, SO KEEP AN EYE OUT ON THAT.

YES I WENT TO NYC. Had the chance to meet up with my editor at DC HQ, what an amazing city! A little too big if you ask me, but wow-- u can find ANYTHING there.The ACE HOTEL IS BRILLIANT-- Hipster feel for a hipster world, we had bunks beds in our room, how crazy is that?

POLAND IS BEING INVADED BY GABOSAUR! Okay, the word INVASION is a bit pretentious, but still -- PIRAT vol 2 is OUT NOW.

Conceived by MIKOLAJ and amazing YET TO BE DISCOVERED comix gorilla, PIRAT is one of THE best looking anthologies I've had the amazing honor of being in. It's a real damn shame that this isn't translated into english, because the stories in these books look so damn good -- I only wish i could read them!

The book features part two of CHICAGUA, a story of a taco delivery guy in a post apocalyptic world where beef is hard to come by. The story is so old, i think i drew it 2 years ago -- I hope so much to revisit it and actually complete it someday soon, maybe after I graduate!

If you have the cash, and don't mind waiting a few weeks for delivery, -- PICK THIS BOOK UP-- and find yourself a translator -- you won't be disappointed!

The Good Soldier

For someone who's so busy, i actually sleep better than most people i know. Maybe not so much BETTER, but i sure as hell get MORE sleep than most of my friends. Maybe it's because I value my sleep, and I hate the idea of having to down four or five red bulls (which isn't good for my already horrible blood pressure!).

So, busy i say? I mean it! This past wednesday, I am proud to say that two books i contributed to hit the comic book stores!

First and foremost, Elephantmen #25 -- which has 25 amazing artists-- you'll find my page on pg 3! Bunch of dead people-- that was really fun and tough to draw.

Second-- THE SPIRIT #1, drawn by MORITAT and colored by me, with flats by mr astrobrain
that has been a helluva learning experience, and it seems people are really diggin the first issue-- so hopefully we get to stick around for many more! I JUST finished wrapping up issue two, and lemme tell you-- the action gets INTENSE.

Tough, tough quarter.
Started off really strong, hit up SDCC, made a lot of new connections.. not only in the comic field but animation as well.
When i got back though there was hell to pay. I had missed two days of school, and did no work during my lil vaca.
Set me back really bad, and the next month was just lost to catching up and hating catching up.

Catching up was difficult too, as i had some big projects on my plate that i had to knock out.
One of which just dropped on the 30th, JLA 80 page giant! (interview with writer) . Moritat (Justin Norman) and I worked on the ten pager we got, and I think he rocked the hell out of it. The colors, initially were amazing.. but after having to mess with the saturation levels, it just lost its flair.. in my opinion, as you can see in the sample... wish i had the original still...

I've got a slew of other stuff i'll be posting through the week, just tryin to relax during my puny one week vaca (which is really only 2 days of true vaca, since i work fulltime hur hur.)

They were made for two "employee picks" end caps, where employees pick several of their favorite movies, tv shows and cd's to put up as suggestions on what to pick up.

Skeleton Boy

Chicago comic-con is done. Thank God.
This year was horrible. Absolutely the worst "big box" convention I've ever been to.
Marvel, DC, AND Image failed to show up, leaving a big convention hall to be filled with washed up wrestling stars and sub par movie stars alike. Not to mention every 30 minutes their was an over head announcement regarding gaming tournaments people could join up in... which weren't all that fantastic to begin with-- $20 entry fee, and second place won $28? FUN.

The only thing that managed to save the whole event was getting together with a slew of my internet amigos and amigas. I had the pleasure of finally meeting some people I've been friends with for years in person.

From how things are looking though, I think SDCC will be the only summer con i will be attending from now on.

Next month there's another lil con coming to the city, Windy City Con, and my boss mr richard starkings (http://www.hipflask.com/) will be a guest there, so I gotta sharpen up my skills on drawing me some sexy girls!

And thats exactly what I did on monday!

I'm only gonna do a quick recap-- or bullet points of epic shit i did, cause I am still trying to catch up on homework because of sunny san d.

Helped kevin eastmen n crew set up heavy metal booth, yes.. mr ninja turtles, I work for him now.. oh yes.
Had lunch with Claudio and his lovely fiance, yes claudio from coheed and cambria. I kept my cool, didn't geek out AT ALL. NOT AT ALL. I'm not that kinda guy ;)
Hung with many amazing peoples. I love you all.
Sgt Mark is a godamn hero and I would make love to him, if i had the right equipment.
Sheldon almost got his ass beat by Ray Park, yes.. darth maul. Instead, Darth was a nice guy and pulled his drunk friend off of sheldon.
Drew many pictures for many beautiful peoples at the elephantmen table all week.
Watched Mad Max 2 and a luchador movie at Ben Templesmith's crib-- yes 30 days of night Templesmith. He had a projector pointing at a giant white brick wall, genius.
There's tons of other things I can't think of. So i'll leave them in my mind for the brain people to feed on and dissolve.

Back in chicago now-- getting ready for a wizard world chicago.
I'm conned out man, why can't i get a longer break?

Another month passes by and I neglect my poor lil blog spot...i really wish i could get more posted, but somehow I feel that posting obsessively would be a waste of my time?
I reckon i draw enough on a weekly basis to update this bad boy constantly, but i hardly scan my stuff... I think I've grown out of the "I WANT TO SHOW OFF MY NEW ART PIECES TO THE INTERNETS!" mentality.

Then again, why would i be doing this?
To be honest, so the handful of people that come here know i'm still alive heh.
I reckon its also a nice record of what kind of person i was at this time in age.
I've read over some VERY OLD posts from when i was younger, and Christ all mighty have I grown up. The shit i used to say, i'll never understand why i acted like that... but anyhow, onto the progress of gabo.

Winter quarter of school wasn't that hard or stressing.
The first few weeks were really dragging, I had a materials and lighting class that really didnt go anywhere, the teacher didnt really come out of his shell until mid quarter, so I felt as though we could have learned A LOT more, but what can you do?
3D modeling class i managed to show up to late everyday, by at least an hour. Didn't matter much as the teacher didnt really start teaching/lecturing until an hour into the class.. which worked out perfect. I managed to learn a lot in that class, we modeled both male and female human bodies, in different ways... so that was rewarding.
I even had enough time to model my own character.. which was really awesome.
I've got the same teacher next quarter for character rigging, which means i'll be able to animate this lil dude, which will be damn awesome.

2d animation started off really slow, i tried putting together something that was just too advanced for me, well maybe not so much ADVANCED but just a pain in the ass to animate. I picked this guy on the bike to animate, and after a few motion studies i realized that i needed to something that i could actually get done in the 11 weeks we had in class. Something SIMPLER. Unfortunatley I didnt finish my animation, but it IS looking mighty sweet. I'll be sure to post it when its done for all you to oogle at.

Now the biggest thing of all this first quarter was WONDERCON. I got to hang out with a fantastic man, mister Justin Norman.. the artist for elpehantmen. This guy has done so much for me in terms of comic gigs, that its insane. I'm so damn grateful to him for getting me talking to the poeple that i need to talk to. I got to hang out with him and the ever graceful, mystical and powerful Richard Starkings, owner of Comicraft, and writer for Elephantmen comic. I got to hang out at the Image booth, selling Elephantmen and drawing sketches for patrons all weekend long, it was the most humbling and rewarding convention experience of my life.
Those two guys have really brought me up in the pro ranks so fast, that my head is still spinning, i'm so grateful I've had the opportunity to work with and for them.
There's a bunch of other stuff that's cookin on the gabogrill right now...but i'd rather not discuss it till its a bit more cooked.

Back once again, with the ill behavior ladies and amigos.
Been hella busy working on elephantmen flats, and school work.. and while I'd love to show the colors I've been doin, you'll have to run to your local comix shop to scope THAT OUT.

WHAT I CAN SHOW YOU THOUGH--- New work i been doin at school.
My first class in line is intermediate 3d modeling, so in essence -- learn how to model a human character. One of the first assignments in class was to draw up a design sheet for a character we'd like to model near the end of the class, so i conjured up my lil buddy SQUARDO, level 7 glory monk. I'll be unleashing a lil mini comic with him in a few weeks, its sort of an experimental comic me and my boy NAMNIK are whippin up, where i draw the panels first, and he fills in the bubbles-- without any of my help. We'll see how that turns out! He does some good writing, so i'm sure it'll be tasty.

Along with that, here's a screen cap of the current 3d model we're building, built up from a single box, so thats pretty neat to learn. This whole 3d mess gets a bit tricky, specially when you get triangles or 5 sided polys going on, it can really mess things up when its renderin, SO AVOID THOSE BADDIES, KIDS!
This class is really giving me a deep thirst to want to model my own characters just for fun, maybe even animate them.. which will be done next quarter when i take intermediate 3d animation! YAH.

Son Mis Dias (These are my days)

DONE. FINALS BE DONE AMIGOS.
FINALLY. I made out pretty good this quarter, managed to score to jobs doing colors for elephantmen, and a third coming up during xmas break, so i'ma happy camper right now. The only troublesome class was AUDIO, which wasnt so much hard in terms of work, that part was easiest thing i've had to do to date, but it was waking up on time to get there on time that really tore me a new one.
The teacher was a real tight ass, and I for one appreciate his attitude, but godamn does it suck. He gave tests right at the start of class (8am), so i managed to miss all of them. It's not as bad as it sounds, the tests were bullshit lil points, and there were only two of them, but still -- a zero is a zero and two zeros can really put a drag on yer average.
Most teachers give you till the end of the class if not the end of the day to turn in projects, the day they're due... but this guy gave you till 10, 930 or 9 to turn them in. If they were in a minute after you'd get 50% off the grade, thats HORRIBLE. And that's were i appreciate it. In the real world, if i turned in a project late... i'd prolly just straight up get fired, so i'm thankful for getting 50% as opposed to nothing at all.
That info was news to me, so the first project ended up being 50% off. I can't blame anyone but me though, i didnt show up to the first day of class-- rather i showed up minutes after he let the class out early.. which meant i missed the syllabus reading, which i should have read on my own... then i woulda known about the 50% off bullspit.

MOVING ON --->
Eco biology was a breeze -- twas one of the toughest classes i've had at the school, only because he expected you to actually remember things. Other gen eds at school have been easy, and usually we take a test on one or 2 chapters. This guy gave tests on 3 chapters which all covered shit tons of information... needless to say i never really studied, but i know i came out with a B at least. Learned me some nice things about the environment too, stuff i'm implementing into story ideas right now actually.. so that was worth while.

Last class i took this quarter was 3d animation. Yer basic animation class on 3d, learned how to use 3d studio max for animating. Last quarter i took a class learning how to model basic things, so this was the next step. In the end we were supposed to make a 10-30 second animation, but good ol me missed that tid bit -- so here i shelled out a movie that ran about 2.5 minutes long. It was a great learning experience nonetheless.. i'm really starting to dig this 3d stuff.

I actually made a bold and prolly really bad decision, but i went ahead and sold my xbox. Yah. To be honest i never play it to begin with. Leah likes to watch tv, and sometimes i'd rather watch anthony bordain's "NO RESERVATIONS" than play a videogame. Could it be that i'm getting to be an old man, and those types of things just dont do it for me anymore?

I've even been getting the itch to READ. And i dont mean like back issues of spiderman -- i mean books, novels. Maybe not just novels but maybe things that can expand my mind in terms of world culture.
I've come to realize while being in gen ed classes that those clases are actually really valuable. A lot of the kids there go on and on about how gen eds are a waste of time, as they'll never be useful in the art world, but i'll tell you what, if it hadn't been for US history, i would have never done a comic about manzanar. History is pure gold in terms of brainstomring for ideas. You dont know how many ideas of thought of where i take history, science and math and inject it into the worlds i create... its so uplifting to be able to pull from that bank of knowledge, it really is.

Anyways, before i start writing an essay on why gen eds are important to growing artists, i'm gonna leave you with a lil taste of something thats been baking in my oven brain for the past few months.
Mailer Daemon is the story of a young lad who is one of the last physical mail carriers left in the universe. With the advent of electronic mail, snail mail has been getting less and less popular-- so i took it a step forward and peek into the distant future where snail mail is damn near extinct. Our protago is assigned to devlier a package that he later finds out is something that will not only completely revolutionize the way poeple communicate and send mail-- but will also make him and his electronic friends completely obselete.
Its still very much in the fetus stages, so i wouldn't hold my breate for anything complete for quite a while. I had a hankerin for some watercolors, so i listened to my urges and played around with some dual lighting power.
I like the warm glow on the back of daemon -- i'm totally proud of that NO LIES.
I think i might go back and add a couple more layers to it in the future, i dont feel that its quite done yet... till then - keep warm kiddies.

I'm not gonna bother checkin when's the last time I've updated this thing, so instead i'll just get kickin into what i've been DOING.

Past two months have been 75% school, and 25% comic work.
Most of the school stuff i'll be able to put up shortly, but as for the comic work- its been more colorin than actually drawing (unfortunately :/) But it's not so bad being as its paying work YAH!

FAT CHUNK VOL 1 : ROBOTS IS OUT RIGHT NOW. Wow, i've waiting so long for this, i managed to slip in a short two page story (most of the comics in there are 2-3 pages, if not just one.) I dont know how well this book is gonna do, i dont think i've ever seen a book comprised of 30+ 2-3 pg entries. Then again, if you've ever read comics like milk and cheese or johnny the homicidal maniac, you'll be used to that format. Either way its exciting to see this finally come out. There's a lot of amazing artists in this lil book, and i cant wait to get my manly hands around it. I wish i had time to put together some for the zombie issue, maybe i can slip in my lil 2pgr this month. GO GET YER COPY RIGHT NOW, ITS NEAT.

Where can i start this? Its been entirely too long since i've posted, i really hate falling off the blogger horse, .. so i'll do my best to get back on track with some highlights.

In may, i hit up seattle con, and had a wonderful time. I struck up an amazing friendship with Mr Justin Norman, AKA MORITAT. He's taken me under his wing as his lil apprentice of sorts, at least thats how it feels, and i'm so grateful.. i've learned so much from him in the past few weeks. Him and Brandon Graham are like my senseis, one in the art of crazy dynamic comics, and the other in the ways of business and speed.

over the past few weeks i've been doing a lot of prepping for the con season, just putting together stuff i can sell, and its been okay on the profit front, but this past weekend really bombed. Wizard World Chicago was a complete bust, it turned out that there were a few other festival type events going on in the city of Chicago, so a lot of the usual traffic that the con gets in august, was now dispersed across the town. That was a bit upsetting, the only upside was a visit from a gentleman from Wizards of the West Coast, and i've punched myself repeatedly in the face for not having gotten his info or even bothered to jot down his name.

I dont want to get too caught up in too much right now, so i'll disperse what i've been up to in lil installments.

Okay so, i got this buddy, okay i wont lie, i hardly know the guy, but he did something for pulpopress.com fourth PULPO anthology, so in return he asked me to do something for HIS anthology, PIRAT. SO I DID. And i think it came out pretty neat. GALVO IS NOW ON ZUDACOMICS.COM. Yah thats right! I finally got on the comics competition being backed by DC COMICS. Very exciting stuff! Its sort of a comic battle, where you submit 8 pages of a short story, and then people vote on who did the best. I'm a tad weirded out that my entry is sitting at last place, regardless off all the great comments i've been receiving, but i have to say that i'm super excited that i've had the opportunity to go up against some damn good competition, so being in last isn't in the slightest upsetting. I think if i do a lil more advertising to the people that enjoy my work, i can get my rank to go up more hopefully, but either way, its been an honor to even BE in the competition.

SPEAKERDOG POWER IS HERE. YESSS, if you guys haven't see this place its amazing. Speakerdog.com is a site started up by the very much epic senor Ben the Illustrator, and they've got some awesome paper toys, with 5 different series to choose from. Each paper dog is tagged up by a different artist, and they all look so fresh. AND PART OF THAT NEW FIFTH SERIES, IS YOURS TRULY... with Ranas and El Pompis! It was an honor and so fun tryin to figure out something for this lil project, and really the thing i love the most about these speakerdogs is that they're totally free to download! It seems that paper toys are really starting to pick up some steam, i've been seeing more and more of them lately, with very creative architectural thought put into them. Did me up a fresh lil drawing this weekend, and yes this may sound weird, but it was for my dentist's bday. My girl works in a dentist office, so its just natural for her to make friends with the people she works with, and my dentist there, is one awesome guy. He's got the illest tattoos and plays some rad synth music. He's fallen in love with my iono robot, so i thought id do him up a pic. So one friday afternoon in the middle of panera, i conjured up this lil fella, and that night i managed to knock out the photoshop heavy colors. I'll prolly dismantle it, add a different bg to it, change the name on the shoes, the screen will prolly say gabo or gaza, and then sell prints at cons. Them kids gobble this stuff up.

In other news, i have this nagging, cronic itch in my throat, like a soar throat type thing, and its bugging the hell out of me. It feels like its starting to fade, but damn its so annoying. I think its been causing my lack of production art, i've really only been doodling lately, besides the pic up top. I'm getting back into the mix fo sho though, so hopefully i can get back into full steam this week. I've got A LOT to make up for CHICAGUA, little less than 30 pages to annihilate by the end of march, gotta have em done so i can print up the book for the beginning of may.. i should be able to swing that, i hope.

I've been waiting many many weeks to let this bit of news loose, but yes... i've been given the epic opportunity to draw short comics for AniCoz magazine! Its a fresh lil chicago based cosplay magazine that is picking up heavy winds. I hope that makes sense... what i mean to say is, its blowing up very fast. The mag shows off people's costumes of different anime/manga/game characters, which they were to anime conventions, coupled up with reviews of thoe cons across the US, its a pretty neat magazine, not to mention the list of upcoming conventions on the back cover! Something i wish i had when i was younger.

I met the lovely creator and chief editor of the mag many moons ago at a small anime con out here in the burbs (the-reactor.org), and we got to talkin a bit online here n there, and after the first couple issues, somehow it came about that maybe i should do a short, cute comic for the kids to read. So i took advantage of the opportunity and put together a 2 page comic showcasing my lil bread peoples, sally and frenchee. So far it seems to be receiving great reviews, people are liking the addition to the magazine, so thats really exciting. I've got a second one brewing in my noggin, so hopefully i can get that done soon. My scanner is dying. I spent about 30 minutes messing with it. The diagnosis? Every time i plug it in, (via usb) it runs its own lil "AM I RUNNING OKAY?" test, and last night it messed up for the second time since the beginning of the year. It runs all the way up to the end, and then just gets STUCK, and makes this awful CLICKING noise, like its screaming for me to help him, but papa cant do nothing cause lil scanner boy is stuck behind a glass window. Its really upsetting when something you spent some big money on, (80 some dollars is a lot of money to me.) starts to break down on you... seemingly for no reason at all. Sure sure, i could have taken better care of it, and stacking books and other heavy shit on it prolly isnt the best thing to do, but all in all its lasted a damn long time. I got the thing sometime back in '01 or '02, so i'm rather proud of its life.

Well gabe why dont you go out and just get another one? Okay sure, i mean i got money. I CAN go out and buy another one, but you know what i'm going to end up paying? To begin with, i only buy electronics at work (best buy). If i cant get an extended warranty on it, then i dont feel secure. Not to mention that most of the scanners they sell nowadays are more expensive than all-in-one printers that happen to have really shitty scanners attached to them. But to top it all off... THIS SCANNER HAS BEEN WITH ME FOREVER, itd be like going out to get a new dog when you know the current one is on its way out... theres something, sick about that. Yah okay i'm being a bit dramatic, but dammit thats 100 dollars i can spend on like, ... food? printing comics, posters, art supplies! I mean sure, i can always run to school and scan whatever needs scanning, and thats what i do with all my 11x17 pages, but jeez... theres nothing better than drawing up a quick lil epic doodle and scanning it up real fast to show off to the rest of the world. JUST AS I WANTED TO DO LAST NIGHT.

Eventually the damn thing fixed it self (God only knows how..) and i managed to scan the caca i've been conjuring up these past few days. In other news... when i was Panera on wednesday night, a kind gentlemen type cat came up to me and chose to chat it up and ask me about my art. Nothing much was said, but we exchanged biz cards, he claimed that his company often hires people from columbia (art school down in the city), so now i'm intrigued. He called me up this afternoon, but i couldnt answer the phone, so i think i'll give him a jingle back tommorrow... see what this leads too.

My throat is killin me right now, ive had this damn cold since last friday night, and its really starting to overstay its welcome. I dont think i said that right, must be the nyquil. But i digress, please, sit back and enjoy the eye soldering art you are about to download into your optics!

I've been wanting to update for quite some time now, but i've been tryin to get over the fact that the ketches i'm about to post, for the most part are complete crap. I think i've just been forcing myself to sketch when i'm between classes or during break time in said classes. I think maybe its also my ego tryin to show off, tryin to put up my dukes, so these kids get a taste of what i'm capable of... as most of them drawing the same character or general THING over and over again.

And there i go bitchin bout the kids at school, who unfortunately dont know any better.. BUT IM WORKIN ON THAT.
While i was inkin a page for CHICAGUA, i had a young lad by the name of GENE (hyperboy.deviantart.com) who stumbled about and was taken back by the detail in my pages, i introduced myself and encouraged him to join entervoid.com (of course i told him i invented it) and to my surprise he actually knew about it.

After check out his DA account, i came to realize this cat knows a lot more people that i know... not something i had even fathomed when i talked to him. The kid has MAD potential, his style is just ACHING to break out and annihilate the weaklings at school, and if he lets me... ima give that kid all the tools he needs to do just that. I need someone to challenge me there, someone i can hate...in a friendly manner hahaha.

This week has been one of the best weeks for me, professional than i have had in a very long time, in the next coming weeks, i'm going to pull up so much awesome news and work and love that i'm gonna explode. And all this good news thats come along means i gotta bust my ass even harder. As of late of i've been slacking on these pages for CHICAGUA, due to some personal issues, but now things are back on track, and soon enough i'll post some pages of that for all of you to read... for now please, allow me to burn your eyes with this crap sketch love.

RESPARK.NET (my host) is experiencing some technical difficulties, which is why you wont be able to see the images in the posts before this one. So in order to continue, i've had to move my base of operation to a sub folder under entervoid.com, which i used to have, but never really updated. What hurts the most though, is the fear that i might not get my files back. I didnt really make a back up of all the stuff i had posted before, why? because i totally trust the internet way too much.

Hopefully i've learned my lesson.
I managed to finish a few projects this week, and i've gotten some great news on others, THAT I SHALL DIVULGE WHEN IT HAS ALL BEEN SETTLED AND WHAT NOT.

I dont really have much to post, i've been doodling a lot in my new sketchbook, but i'm just tired and my the damn S key on my keyboard keeps acting up. So i leave you with some really stupid sketches.

school vs exposure

Recently i was approached by a comic artist by the name of Mikolaj to throw in some page for a anthology (i'm assuming) in some other part of the world. I should have asked him where exactly, but i figure i'll do that once i turn in th pages (if you click on his name and go to his blogspot, maybe someone can tell me what language that is?) Moving on though, i decided to take the first 10 page of CHICAGUA and give him that.

Now my dilemma is this: Should i feel bad for not doing my school work 100%, so i can finish up these pages and get some exposure in another country? Shit should i even worry? Really the worst that can and will happen is that the teacher is disappointed and marks me late on some projects. I can live with that. If the teach were to take some other abrasive attitude with my excuse for not having my shit done, could he really take that attitude when i told him its for a publication in another country, and it can potentially expand my audience exponentially? I'm almost positive that all he would do is encourage me to get both of the tasks at hand done as fast as possible.

Either way, i'm almost done with the pages, and once i have that together i'll be posting them.
I'm happy to report that i've been doodling more, rather than going straight to production work. It's a really great way to warm up, and i know i've been neglecting that practice for quite some time now, so doin this is really starting to jump start my brain before i get to the nitty gritty.

I'm trickling in some more of these random sketch session i had weeks ago at the panera near my work. This is the level of creativity i want to get back to and beyond. Lately its been nothing more than horribly rendered figure studies, which often turn into incoherent scribbles. My fav piece there is fat dude with the long jacket, he's one of the characters in my new short i'll have done for the con season. Name is still unkown, but i think i have an idea of what it'll be. Something a lil personal, a dedication of sorts.

I've noticed that a lot of kids who take advance life drawing class at school, dont really carry on the lessons that they learn in class on to their growing skill set, and i think for the most part its for two very simple but problematic reasons:

a) the act of drawing a person PROPERLY, (as in proportional proper) completely and utterly disrupts their comfortable way of drawing their characters, or characters they enjoy drawing.

b) the idea of drawing a person properly has taken over their previous stylistic way of creating a character, and they cant find that middle ground where proportions and their infinite mathematical connections meet style.

For me, i fall under the category of B. It seems that lately i'm more obsessed with making sure that a characters muscles are properly displayed and the proportions are just right, according to what the average human should be like. I get scared now tryin to draw really fat dudes with longer than normal arms and big fat heads, cause it just doesnt look right to me anymore, it doesnt look RIGHT. But i'm happy to say that today as i was workin on some motion studies for characterization class, I sorta broke out of that mental block and totally busted out the meanest lil egg lookin dude to date.

And so now that i write this, i realize that i totally forgot to scan some of those images, and since i'm ready to pass out i'm just going to leave you with some older sketches i've churned out at the panera down the block from work.

I haven't had a real sketchbook in quite sometime, and what i mean by real sketchbook is something that can't fit in my back pocket, so i busted out the wallet and picked myself up something that wasnt too big, and not too small.

I havent really drawn much in it, just a lot of warm up bs, it seems that most of what i've been doing has been production work rather than just goofing off... and i think what prompted me to pick this book up was that i've seen a lot of people lately doing more "goofing off" than production, and i've been getting very jealous.

I really miss goofing off, i gotta do it more often.

For the past few months, prolly more like 2 years, i've been on this kick where all i want to do is just draw. Going out with friends, spending time with loved ones, or even playing video games or watching a movie are all activities that i've been lookin down on. Why? because all i want to do is draw. So i keep asking myself, is it that i'm turning into a hermit? I've had these ideas and fantasies of moving to some remote city just out of the blue, not telling anyone i've left and just living on what i can. Get a shitty job somewhere moving boxes or selling furniture, and then just come home and eat shitty ramen and draw my heart out.

Now i would never actually do that, i'm far too dependent on my friends and girlfriend to ever do that, but at the same time i feel like i want to be a SEMI-hermit. Could it be that my work ethic is just beyond what everyone else can handle?

At school i'm doing pretty good, but the lack of effort among 90% of the school is really starting to get on my nerves. People would rather hang out in the student lounge and shoot the shit, than work on their skills. I understand that for most of them, they're in a new environment where they can be themselves, but it's just so depressing that they'd rather run around getting drunk and goofing off rather than work on their future.

Maybe i'm just a jerk, and i have social problems.

I dont scan enough to post on here everyday, so i dont even know why i'm updating now.

What can i say to start this off, but godamn i wish i had posted these stories sooner.
I forget that i have this blog here so i can record wtf i been thinkin in life and the weird shit that happens to me, so i will jot down for you cats select stories i have to share...

Back in june, right after we got out of school... me and three of my newly aquired school chums took a trip out to SIX FLAGS GREAT AMERICA. For those of you who that dont KNOW, its a massive theme park, with epic rides that tear your face off and fuck yer internal organs like only deniro in raging bull could (i just saw that btw, fuckin brilliant). So it was fun. I hadnt been there since 2000, maybe 2k1, it was nice to experience the whole park again but as i pseudo adult. I partook in two helpings of FUNNEL CAKE (if you dont know what THAT is, then i'm sorry.. that is something that you must experience orally before you understand its sheer brilliance). The thing that really stuck out for me that day was one lil event that was not only funny, but sad and, as i can only imagine, TRAGICALLY embarrassing.
We were standing in line waiting to get on the RAGING BULL ride (no its not a ride where you get knocked around by a deniro look alike), and as we looked on to the coaster as it came in, the next slew of kids rushed to get into their seats, and pulled down the safety things that come down... the ones that keep you from plummeting to the green grass below. Now when you get into one of these things, the devices only go so far down, so if yer too short... you cant get on this beast right? But what if yer TOO BIG? Well, i saw the answer to that on that cool summer day.
This poor overweight black mom with several kids gets in and tries to pull down the device, only to find that it doesnt LOCK. The workers there come over and try to push it down for her, but to no avail. What can you do in that situation? I'll tell you what you can do, yell at the worker to try harder! So thats what she did, and the worker insisted that it wasnt going to work, and that she needed to get out and exit the ride. She gives in eventually and gets up, taking her lil troop of hellions along with her. How upsetting. But what can you do? Poor lady probably doesnt have much time to herself, with all the kids she has to take after, and God knows its much easier to just go out and buy mcdonalds for everyone rather than slave in front of a hot ass stove right? Okay, so that settles that... she's had several kids, getting fat is very easy. But what about a teenager?
Right before our turn, a trio of girls hop onto the ride and one of them, taller than me (i'm 6'1") gets in and tries to pull down the device. No luck. This girl is FAR too big. What can you say to that? I can say one thing, "wtf are you doing?" Its not like these kids have JOBS. In fact their JOBS are to go outside and PLAY. That girl should not be that fat, and sure sure, theres some kids that cant help it, but damn... i almost felt bad for her. Yes she got kicked off the ride... and whats worse is, her freinds stayed IN the ride, and she walked off by herself. Thats fuckin cooooollldd BLOODED.

I think when you reach that point, where you cant get on a ride cause yer too fat... its time to fucking start working out. Thats horrible.

Moving on then...
I think two weeks ago, i was sitting at my desk working on "Amo Jamon", and it was damn hot so i decided to get myself a slurpee in the midst of me losing my mind. I hop in my lil golden cobalt and book it to the local 7/11 to get my cherry fix. As i get closer i realize that theres shit tons of cops crowded a few feet from the store. I creep in closer and realize that the street is blocked off. I'm TWENTY FEET FUCKING FEET from the damn store, i cant get through... so what do i do? park my damn car, get out and book it on foot.
As i'm walking past all these cops, one of them stops me, points to a car and asks if its mine. I then point to MY car, several feet away, and respond with "nooo way, i just parked over there amigo". I continue walking, and dont pay much attention to whats going on, i just want my godamn slurpee, and the humidity isnt helping. As i round the corner of the store i'm confronting by a few people standing around talking. This isnt something NORMAL around my neighborhood...unless its a bunch of kids... but these people were adults. I examine the situation and notice a cop asking some lady questions, i blow past them and go inside the store.
After i get my cherry delight, i blast over to the register so i can get my ass back to work, and a father and son combo pull up behind me in line. The son busts out a question...

"Dad, what happened to that man? Why did they put him in a ambulance?"
"He got shot!"
"Is he gonna live?"
"i dont know buddy..."
"i dont think he's gonna live..."
"well i guess we wont know that till we read the paper buddy"
"i think he's gonna die..."

What the fuck? What the fuck did this kid just go on about? Well obviously some dude got shot? I pay the lady at the counter and ask her in spanish wtf is going on. All the meanwhile theres a cop blazing back and forth behind me, asking the store manager for surveillance tapes. The lady tells me she was minding her own business and some cop knocked on the door of the store, as if he couldn't open the damn thing. I proceed to say, wow thats fucked up.. and i leave.
As i step outside, i see the same poeple still chatting it up. And as i round the corner i see a cop lady interrogating some lil kid. He gives out some sort of description and i chuckle... what are the chances this kid knows the dude who fired the shot, and now he's giving out some fake ass info. I'm a cynical cunt arent I? I keep walking, and mind you its dark as all nuts that night, theres no real light posts around the area where the shit went down, so theres 8 or 9 cops walking around in the grass behind the 7/11 with their cute lil flashlights, lookin for a shell casing or some other evidence i imagine. I blow past them just minding my own business, and nobody says shit. The damn place should have been ropped off, which some of it was, but wow... I was so damn surprised none of them douches stopped me and asked me more questions. Thats a lil fucked up dont you think? I dont know about you, but if i saw some shit head with a slurpee in his hand walking past my crime scene i would pull his ass to the side and tell him to piss off.
Turns out the shooting had happened just minutes before i got there, fucked up huh? I always imagine driving and getting a bullet somewhere on my body that was meant for some other twat. Coulda happened that night i reckon.

My last lil story happened today.
Everyday i'm at work i hear some retarded, astounding, amazing and frustrating shit. Today was no different. And it was such a short event, but it fucked me up so much. I'm starring off into the abyss that is best buy, and right in front of my lil post (i'm the greeter security cat), this young girl, couldn't have been more than 12, runs to a rack of dvds, picks one up and yells to her mom (who is several registers away)

"MOM LOOK, ITS ONLY $14.99!"

I wanted to reach out, dhalsim style and knock her on her ass. FOURTEEN BUCKS IS A LOT OF MONEY MAN. Her mom obviously looked up and said "PUT THAT DOWN, GET OVER HERE! NO.", but seriously... fiften dollars is a lot of damn money. You can feed 3 adults on that amount at some shit faced fast food joint... and she wants to buy a movie? I dont know about you, but 15 dollars for a movie is NOT worth it. I wait for them epic sales where shit is 4.99 or even 8.99. Godamn kids.

Freakin hello to you boys n gals, summer break is going by awful slow... and thats good for me HEH. Did another lil live art show last saturday and put together this lil monster for the owner, it was fun to do but the damn paint would not dry fast enough, i figure cuase it was a bit damp outside and i was watering down the acrylic a lil more too iono. Anyways, he seemed to like it, but you never really know whether or not they love it until you hear from someone else who knows them personally and is willing to tell you the truth.

Workin on putting together VOID 4.0 now, its gonna be a damn pain in the ass for sure, toast has been pretty much rebuilding the site from scratch since our lil incident back at the end of 2006 was caused by some lazy coding on his behalf, or some shit like that. Either way, he's putting massive work into our lil baby and she's gonna come out like a fucking superstar later this year FO SHO. That guy is a fucking MACHINE lemme tell you.

Still pushing along on the lil project i got going for a special lil anthology, which is due at the end of july so i really gotta start feeding more coal to my engine, specially with school coming up in 2 weeks.

Cant wait to get back into the mix though, i feel so empty without constantly learning new shit... I mean there's always your day to day "oh i didnt know that! you learn something new everyday" type of events in your life, but i'm talking bout the stuff you learn in school.. the really awkward stuff you already knew, and yer relearning...yes i'm tired and i'm starting to talk stupid shit. Well whatever, all i know is that i'm sitting on a fatty 4.0 gpa right now, and I have yet to tell my momma bout it, i'm sure she'll find something to bitch about though HA.

Finally done with spring quarter at school, hopefully i walked away with straight A's, but i fear that i got a "B" in fundamentals of art, lame i know. But man sometimes relearning all the basics and doing things that arent new to you can be a real drag si si :\

Working my lil arse off getting shit together for this summer now that i'm on summer break.
I have three weeks to finish up my entry for an upcoming anthology, and get some more sketches done to put together a hot lil sketchbook for the cons i'll be hitting up in the following weeks.

Last night i had a fun time doing a live art show at a quaint lil lounge/bar a few minutes from my house. I jammed out this piece while listening to the dj power of Rick Fabris ( http://myspace.com/rickfrabris ). I learned a few things tonight bout painting which was fun, one thing being that i love painting on hard pressed wood stuff better than canvas. It doesnt have them nooks and crannies, its really smooth so i get some flat textures.. or something. Anyhow, rick kicked up some ideas of maybe coming out there on a weekly basis to do live art and getting a lil dough for being there. Itd be nice, even if it was a free meal ha!

Busy busy 3 weeks coming up, cant wait to post some shit!

I been sitting on this story for damn near two years and i finally it started to stab at my ass enough to where i couldnt stand it no mores! That and i've been achin to use/learn this nifty japanese brush pen i picked up in Seattle a few weeks ago. I'm not really putting much effort into it, as i'm just tryin to a) get the hang of the epic brush pen, and b) tryin out some sequential ideas. Dont really know how long i'll drag this out for, but i've got a somewhat short story arch planned for it so we'll see what happens.
Page 5&6 were totally inspired by Goseki Kojima (Lone Wolf & Cub), i've been reading the book every so often when i get a chance...so his work is really stickin in my head right now.

End of the quarter is lil less than 3 days away (this coming wed, the following monday and next wed), so i'm gearing up for what i hope wont be too tough of a slaughter house test frenzy. Since we fell behind in fundamentals of art, the teacher has decided to cross off our final project and instead make the drawing of the hallways the final project... with some added objects and what not of course. I was really looking forward to doing what had originally been planned which was a big extravagant interior of a room.. although i probably would have done a large city scape that i could use in tout le monde or some other project in the future. Oh well!
Math promises to be an easy test, as the "hard" test we already took (or so she says)... so i'm looking forward to nailing up a big A+ for that class on the fridge door. Psych might dip down to a B+ as i'm a borderline A- right now. Itd be really nice to be able to see my name on the honors/dean's list... something i've never experienced. I wont lie, its not so much for my gratification, but for my mom... i was never that great in school growing up, so now maybe i can make up for that. Now that it counts i figure.

I've had the overwhelming urge to do some animation lately, so i finally took some time to myself and went at it with no worries on who would see it or what they might say. In other words, its got its massive flaws hehe.

I've been wanting to put together a lil animation to play with the "onion peel" button for quite some time now, since a buddy showed me the button... such a genius feature.

The end of second quarter of school is 2 weeks away, freakin crazy. Shit goes by so fast, and its awesome. I love the way they set up the quarters, we have a test every 2 or 3 weeks, so shit really stays fresh in your mind... that or i'm actually smart? HA, either way i'm getting A's in all 3 of my classes so i'm extra excited.

I hope to push out the rest of my lil 18 page project during my lil 3 week vacation before quarter 3 starts... hopefully i dont sleep in too much, i really dont like sleeping. Well scratch that... i love to sleep, i just wish i didnt have to. Its such a waste of time... with exception of transferring short term memory into long term memory of course.

Surprisingly enough, i got a lot done today. Even though i managed to waste about 4 hours playing pokemon dungeon.. yes i play videogames.. but only when i cant draw. Now thats a bunch of shit i know. You can always draw, even if yer on a bumpy ass subway car... but alas.. the mind needs to experience entertainment and some other form of completion no?

so i managed to bust out 3 pages of Amo Jamon this weekend, but that sounds more extravagant than it really is. One of the pages was just a single panel of buildings.. but damn those can be a pain in the ass when you tryin to bust out multiple perspective points. I had to tape extra pieces of computer paper on either end of the bristol to get the perspective i was looking for.

Along with that i managed to wrap up my drapery assignment for fundamentals of drawing class. Yeah yeah i know.. fundamentals of drawing.. fuckin lame right? Eh, to be honest i've learned a few things i never knew... and somethings that i DID know.. but never quite understood how they were done. Not only that, but it makes for good warming up before i hit the comix.

Anyhow, i'm hoping to bust out a few sketches on a daily basis before i start doing anything.. even if its in highlighter pen at work. Just like this lil illo below... i think i might try n do one daily, and then put them into rotation on my site.

itd be neat i figure.

Been working like a monster on some pages for an anthology coming up this fall (or so they say), but man school sure is being a pain in the ass. Its not so much as HARD, but it takes a lot out of me.
Mondays and Wednesdays, I'm waking up at around 6am (not typical for me,..usually its more like 7:30-8am), and busting my ass to school by 8am (which is usually actually like 8:15-8:30), and then i'm there till about 6pm... rather, my last class (i only have three) gets out at 5:50, and then i end up sitting in the student lounge drawing up comics till my girl swings by to pick me up, sometime after 7 or 8. Then if i'm not too puckered out, i hit up the gym for 1-3 hours. THEN I EAT.

Tuesdays i usually walk my happy lil ass to work, start up at 2 or 3 and dont get home till around 10/11 at night. Walking for an hour, and then standing for 8 isnt the funnest thing in the world... but at least I've managed to get 70 some odd thumbnails drawn up for the rest of the Tout Le Monde book.

Thursdays is always 9-4. I get a ride to work in the AM, and i'm usually there around 8:45 cuase my girl works at 9 or 10... and then i walk my happy lil ass home! Its not so bad with the ipod streamin musica into my mind... helps me reflect on a lot of shit, i wouldn't be suprised if it turns my hippocampus on and helps me put some shit into long term memory while i'm taking my lil trek home. Listen to me talking all intelligently, it wont happen often i promise. But while i'm in pshycology, i should try to at least recite what i'm learning, dontcha think?

Friday mornings i work a quick 9-12 shift, and then steph picks me up and we get some delish katsudon from the japanese mall near my girls work. Its fuckin amazing lemme tell you. After that we hit her pad and just crash for the rest of the afternoon, doze off to some vh1 garbage.

Weekends are full of 8 hour shifts that are either closing or opening. I've managed to convince my supervisor to only work me 9-5 on sundays...so at least now i have a nice sunday night to spend with the misses.

Anyfuckingways.. some of the shit i been workin on, for you to gaga over... if my shit warrants that type of reaction that is...

And sketchy shit, just warm ups and character studies...

SO I FINALLY WENT BACK TO SCHOOOOOOLL. Yes, its been like 8 years. When did i graduate you say? 98. YAH. What the hell have i been doing since then? DRAWING. Well okay, i've been drawing with PURPOSE and on a SERIOUS level for the past 4, but still.. i havent just been sitting around twiddling my thumbs.

I can admit that I've been one lucky son of a bitch with electronic equipment. *knock on wood* I've never really blown up a computer, never crashed a hard drive, never exploded a power supply.. none of that shit. So I wasnt too surprised when my scanner final keeled over. I wasnt so much upset, but concerned. Even then i wasnt really concerned, because i know i can just get another one. Or so I thoughts.
Turns out scanners arent that fuckin cheap anymore. Even with my plush lil discount at work, I'll still be looking at $120+, and thats not including the service plan i would most DEFINITELY purchase, just so this shit doesnt happen again. So what would i do now? DRAW LIKE A MONSTER AND RAKE UP THE PAGES AT A LATER DATE AND RUN OVER TO SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE TO SCAN THEM.

Has that been happening? Not at all.
But for good reason lemme tell ya! I've been tryin to finish this damn anthology , but it just seems to be draggin on, but what can you do when you really want to wait on some extra pages right? So with that said, i plan on a VDAY release date for all to purchase. Hopefully i can stick to that heheh.

After that though, the next goal is 1) Making sure i do good in school and 2) i get my book done before march 16. My second book is a beefier version of what i'm putting into pulpo, and with a different ending.. so i'm excited about that one. It'll be my first bonafied graphic novel. SO YAY FOR ME.

School starts the 15th, i havent been back since highschool.. which i never really finished to begin with, i'll be attending the Art Institute of Schaumburg, shooting for game art & design BFA there, but because i didnt score that well on that damn math placement test, they'll be shoving me in media arts and animation degree till i can keep a steady 2.5 gpa going for a quarter or two, which i hope wont be a problem.. specially since i'm 100% awesome and 200% dedicated to doin the best i can so i can get the hell out of dead end job land. I just hope i can get these cats to loan me some cash to PAY. My ma agreed to hook me up with cash for books and stuff, but she cant really help me with tuition for a year or two, since my sister is in school right now too. But thats okay, i live on my own, and i dont make that much at my job.. so the govt should provide me with plenty of free $$$$.

OKAY SO YAH, I GOTTA GO MAKE A NUMBER TWO AND GET SOME SLEEP.

Just had an interview at an online payment company, and it seemed to have gone well. My buddy taht works there says that i prolly got the job, but we'll see...
If i DO get it... shit is gonna get better for me n my girl. Finally i'll be able to pay back the people and companies i owe, and cons will be much easier to get to. HURA!

Been feeling really tired lately. I usually work nights, well not nights... but i close at work.. which means i get home at around 10 or 11, sometimes a bit later.. but regardless i get to bed round one or two, being as leah has to work usually round 9 or 10 the next morning. So on days that i work...I have to go at around three or four, so i end up setting my alarm clock for round 10 or 11. But there in the lies the problem... i dont wake up then. I snooze like a mother fucker, till an hour before i have to work. I KNOW i have shit to do, in fact i have A LOT of shit i have to get done this winter, but i dont get up. I'm seriously starting to believe i have mono or some shit, i dont know. I dont know what thats like. But i think maybe i have to be more tired.

Right bout now i'm feeling that mode of tiredness where when you blink yer eyes kind of go crossed and it takes a second for them to revert to normal... ya .. you know what i mean. And here i woke up at noon today. Bullshit i say.

anyways... some art from church on xmas eve, and some shit from a local bar on wednesday.
oh and king kong was intense. MMHMM.

Bleh, at work ummm, some guy came up to us and asked us for an opinion on which gift card looked nicer.
He was holding two of them, and one of them, while very sparkly and flashy, was a gift card with a large minora on it. So we tried to explain to him that it was for jewish people.. he didnt seem to quite understand, so he asked around to other customers what the significance of the 9 candles was... he then found someone and made sure he told us what that customer said. It was a nice little informative occasion. I just wish the guy wasnt such a close talker, and came straight out of the 80's. ewww.

So i applied at some company last week, not really expecting to get a call back, but suprisingly enough though they DID call me.. and actually wanted to speak to me.. which is nice for a change. My rate for getting a call to come in for an interview for jobs i've applied for in my entire working career has been like less than 10%.

Thats fuckin ridicoulus if you ask me.

Anyways, so they call me, and I try to call back all last week and nobody answers the phone. So this week i promised myself i would call them to see what was up... but i just seriously NEVER remember to do it. But, TODAY... those bastards call me back again, so i made sure to call them back IMMIEDIATLEY.

I ended up going through a short 15 minute over the phone interview and i tell yah... i'm a godamn master at that shit. I could get a job as the president of the united states with phone interviews.
Anyhow... in order for me to get this position.. A) i have to have good credit.. well.. A LEVEL of credit that is acceptable to them. But how good does it have to be? i have no clue.

Now the thing that really got me thinkin was... after they check my credit, they have to have me come in for a personality test. I'm sure anyone who has been trying to find a job lately will noticed that those damn personality tests are required at damn near any company you try to apply to. Which is a bit scary becuase...what if i'm just not built correctly .. SUB CONSCIOUSLY? I mean i can do my best to cover up my sub conscious while i'm around people... but those tests rate how fast or how slow you answer shit, and HOW you answer shit.

Whats gonna happen when ALL companies run off of personality tests? Nobody will have jobs i swear.

I was talking to pyawakit today, and we were jabberin the onslaught of commissions she's been getting lately, and realized that shit, why the hell cant i get some damn commissions?
I assume its becuase my style isn't that tastey among the kids who ask for commissions, who, for the most part, seem to be anime cats ... at least on deviant art that is...

So then that prompted me to revisit an old illo i sketched up damn near a year ago, originally done to sell at cons as prints to unsuspecting anime freaks,.. but of course i never finished it.

Lookin over the old colors (seen below), i realized how much i've learned bout color theory. Now when i go outside and look at shit, i try to figure out what color would show up if i used the eye dropper tool on it, ... shit thats SUPPOSED to be white is actually light mint green.. shit like that. Its hard to think like that, but i'm getting better at it.
And while i know that the previous colors are more TEXT book, i think the new colors give it more emotion.

Been trying my best to keep busy with work, I truly cant stand not drawing on a daily basis. I feel sick, hell even full blown upset when i skip a day without drawing SOMETHING.
